In-Use Compliance Requirements

This page last reviewed January 18, 2012.

The goal of the Verification Procedure, Warranty, and In-Use Compliance Requirements for In-Use Strategies to Control Emissions from Diesel Engines (the Procedure) is to provide durable diesel retrofit systems for use by regulated fleets to help them achieve their required emission reduction goals.  Using the Verification Procedure, applicants perform specific testing and provide data to quantify their emission reduction claims for their diesel emission control strategies, or DECS.  Once verified, in-use testing is required after the systems have been in operation for a period of time.  The goal of this in-use compliance testing is to ensure that an applicant’s verified DECS continues to function in terms of emissions reductions and durability throughout its warranty period, and that the actual products sold to end-users are as effective as those tested for verification.

These in-use compliance requirements apply to each DECS that has been verified, regardless of its current status.  Even strategies that are no longer verified must adhere to the in-use compliance requirements as defined in Section 2709 of the Verification Procedure.
