Comment | It is of the upmost importance to do whatever we can to reduce our dependancy on burning fossil fuels to move citizens where they need to go and create the energy they need to live full and productive lives. California and the USA in general have been much too dependant on personal vehicles to get from place to place. We need strict limits on vechicle emmissions and increased gas milage for our transportation. It is obvious that auto manufacterers are not going to do this voluntarily. When countries make a committment to alternative transportation as they do all over Europe then emmissions and energy demand goes down. I visited my parents twice when they were living in the Netherlands and I was very impressed with the bicycle lanes and train/trolley systems. It is cheap fast and easier to ride your bicycle or take a train than it is to take out your car. Until this happens we will remain too dependant on cars and trucks to transport us from plae to place. SB375 is a small step in the right direction. Recently the city of Santa Clara opened a bike path that runs from very close to my house to very close to my work. I can now ride safely at night without having to worry about being run over by inattentive drivers on cell phones and PDAs. I now ride my bicycle to work at least 3 days a week sometimes more. Previously I could only ride 1-2 days a week due to later work hours which required I ride in the dark when I would be much more at risk of being run over. When riding a bicycle becomes safer and mass transportation becomes easy to use people will change their habits and save the environment and help end our dependancy on foreign oil. Please support this important step in a positive direction. Thank you, Scott Brunson |
