Subject | Support for Vessel Speed Reduction Initiative |
Comment | Dear Ms. Nichols and California Air Pollution Control District Board Members: Hi Mary. My late husband was Jim Ryerson, Director the Santa Barbara APCD and he spoke of you often. Since he died 7 years ago, I have been involved in ocean issues here in Santa Barbara, since I was born down in this area. Also, trying to keep his legacy alive, we have established a Jim Ryerson Environmental Foundation from contributions and every year sponsor an Intern at the Environmental Defense Center. I walk the beach everyday, picking up trash and just enjoying the ocean. Am also a counter with Gray Whales Count. Thus, am deeply involved in reducing the toxic air emissions and the number of whales killed from the large cargo ships that travel off our coast everyday. I can see them from our little home up in Mission Canyon. One of the best ways to reduce these whale strikes is to slow down cargo ships. Doing this meets multiple objectives in your Draft Cap-and-Trade Investment Plan including: reducing GHG emissions and other air pollutants, improving public health, and better protecting whales. I support including vessel speed reduction in your Final Plan as a priority for funding and request Cap-and-Trade money be directed to the Vessel Speed Reduction Initiative. Thanks Mary, to you and the board, for considering adding the "vessel speed reduction" in your final plan! Meanwhile, keep up all the good work you are doing! Sincerely, Christine Ryerson |
