Subject | Support cleaner air Statewide Truck and Bus Regulation 2008 |
Comment | I urge the California Air Resources Board to support the On-Road Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Rule. We need this Rule to reduce emissions and meet state and federal health-based air quality standards, reduce global warming pollution, benefit public health and save lives. Together, diesel particulate matter and NOX from trucks and buses are taking a very serious toll on the health and well being of Californians, especially those groups that are most vulnerable: children and the elderly. In fact, an estimated 4,500 premature deaths and 71,000 cases of asthma attacks and lower respiratory symptoms are caused by diesel pollution related to trucks and buses each year – and these numbers are only expected to rise. In addition, truck drivers are 1.5 to 2 times as likely as workers not exposed to diesel exhaust to develop lung cancer during their lives. Since 50 percent of all Californians live near a highway, these pollutants impact each and every one of us. To protect the health of all Californians, please adopt a strong, effective and health protective On-Road Heavy Duty Truck and Bus Rule. Thank you for your consideration. |
