Comment | To Mary Nichols, CARB chair and Board members: As a long term native California resident, and parent of 3 children and a grand child, I am concerned with the degraded air quality we have in our fair state as well as the lack of economically priced ZEV's available for consumers to purchase and/or lease. We all know that the technology exists today to produce moderately priced ZEVs, however, it is clear that the auto manufactures have resisted and have fought against regulations requiring them to make available these vehicles on a large scale. This "fight" that the auto manufactures have pursued has resulted in delays for our state and our nation in developing and incorporating alternative energy stategies that can help make us more energy independent, to have better air quality and less negative impacts on our natural resouces, and to ultimately ensure a better standard and quality of life for us and our future generations. I request that you, and the California Air Resources Board (CARB), not reduce the number of ZEVs required of automakers by 90%, settling for only 2,500 from 2012-2014, but rather, continue, and if possible, increase the requirement of the automakers to produce over the full 25,000 ZEVs between 2012 to 2014 as has been previously mandated. In addition, I request that you create a separate requirement for plug-in hybrids that will let them replace the dirtiest vehicles in CARB's regulations, rather than the cleanest ZEVs. As a resident of California, I believe that the time has come for our State Government to place the needs of our citizens and the long term health of our environment above the whims of the auto industry. Please do what is clearly right and madate that the automakers produce at least the 25,000 ZEVs between 2012 and 2014. Thank you for your consideration. Bill Deitchman |
