Hello, I am Natalia Balderas a senior at skyline highschool and the
Rose Foundations New Voices Are Rising Climate Resilience fellow
for this year. I have the privilege to live near the Skyline hills.
Surrounded by the beauty of the trees and nature, the tree guarded
freeway, and most importantly, clean water, access to healthy food,
and clean air. Yet when I drive down the hill I can feel the air
become worse and worse as I drive further into East Oakland. I
can't help but think of my best friend and her family who live in
East Oakland, her, her mom, her grandma, and her niece all have
asthma and everyday it's a struggle to breathe. We keep preaching
to the choir how POC and low income communities deserve better, yet
no one ever actually does it and continues to disappoint those
communities in need. We all need to start doing better and start
making real change for these communities. And that change can start
here, by making East Oakland an AB 617 community. Thank you
