Comment | Dear California Air Resources Board Members: I am writing as a private citizen and outdoors person. I am concerned about the proposed passenger boat regulations requiring new engines and technology that are not feasible from a safety, financial, or operational standpoint. By the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) own admission, the proposed regulations will likely remove passenger boats made of wood and fiberglass from service. This would apply to over 80% of all boats! If boat owners can't afford to spend millions of dollars for new metal boats --- or you can't or won't pay twice as much for boat tickets to pay for the new boats, boat owners will be forced out of business. As a long time recreational fisherman, this will drastically impact my ability to enjoy the ocean and participate in my favorite pastime. Some of my best times have been with family and friends out on the water and I do not want to lose those opportunities - for myself and future Californians. If these regulations are adopted, and boats are removed from the water, fishing participation rates will decline and so will fishing license sales that fund critical offshore and inland conservation and fishery programs - programs that are essential to environmental sustainability and access to plentiful fish. I appreciate the hard work the Newsom Administration and CARB have done for our state, however the negative aspects of the proposed regulations far outweigh the good they may generate. I ask that CARB pull the proposed regulations and work with the sport fishing community to find a solution that protects their livelihood, our access to the ocean, and also helps reduce air pollution. Sincerely, Michael Mark Brady Pasadena, CA 91107 |
