| Comment | In order to reduce VMT we need to invest in infrastructure that
will enable widespread mode shift, and make car ownership optional.
This can be done with the creation of a safe, connected, beautiful,
culturally-responsive multi-use trail network. Our state needs to
prioritize the opportunity for people to walk, bike, roll and
stroll to local destinations, such as schools, retail, jobs,
transit, and homes.
Trails allow our communities to become more livable by increasing
mobility access for folks of multiple abilities, allowing for
low-to-no cost transportation for resource-limited families, and
can be sites of ecological restoration. Trails are a step towards
mobility justice and planning for our climate future.
Multi-use trails are not just bike paths: they are linear parks,
places to exercise, and for communities to gather. Trails are sites
for active transportation, not only recreation. The benefits of
trails are tremendous for health, wellness, environmental
sustainability, and economic development.
Rails to Rails Conservancy urges you to fund further construction
of the Bay Area Trails Collaborative's 2,600-mile active
transportation network, in order to reduce vehicle miles traveled.
Thank you,
Iman Sylvain, PhD
