Comment | October 26, 2021 Attn: California Air Resources Board Re: Clean Mobilities in schools - Fundingplan2021 Letter of Support Dear Assemblyman Frazier: On behalf of Twin Rivers Unified School District, I am writing in support of funding the next highest ranked applications for the FY 2018-2019 Clean Mobility in Schools solicitation. We are a public school district located in a disadvantaged community; student enrollment is 32,000. We are the first school district to deploy the largest fleet of electric school buses in the nation. California has some of the oldest school buses in the nation, and thousands of diesel school buses are nearing or beyond their useful life. In addition to school buses, vehicles (trucks, cars, and lawn equipment) create dangerous air pollution. Students, bus maintenance technicians, teachers, and bus drivers are exposed daily to high levels of hazardous air pollution. Inhaling diesel exhaust, a dangerous carcinogen, causes respiratory diseases and worsens existing health conditions like asthma. These negative effects especially impact children whose lungs are still developing. Zero-emission school buses can save schools thousands of dollars in maintenance and fuel costs while providing quieter, healthier student transportation. With this proposed funding, electric powered trucks, vehicles, and lawn equipment could be showcased to build clean mobility in schools model. Clean Mobility in Schools safeguards the health of our schoolchildren, helps schools save money while upgrading their vehicle fleet, and improves the air quality of our neighborhoods. Sincerely, Linda Lemon |
