I understand that the technology that is being required for
California's sports fishing fleet doesn't even exist. Additionally
if and when the emissions controls or new engines are installed
their are those who believe that the cost can simply be passed on
to the fisherman by charging higher fees. The lowest estimate I've
seen is 3 times the current cost. Would any member of the board
accept such a situation, paying 3 times for any item when there are
workable solutions? New boats would cost $4-6 million, current
sportfishing boat owners would be put out of business. I am hopeful
that common sense will prevail in this situation.
