SubjectYes to tough 2022-25 car pollution rules!

This is a message of gratitude and support for the California Air
Resources Board, Board Chair Mary Nichols, Board member Hector de
la Torre, and other members of the Board who have announced their
intention to finalize tough car pollution rules at their March
23-24,2017 Board Meeting.

The rules to be finalized were worked out by the federal
government, carmakers and California during Obama's presidency.
They include stricter tailpipe emissions targets for model years
2022-2025 and a California mandate for zero-emissions cars. These
rules will influence policy in enough other states so that car
manufacturers will probably choose to comply with them for national
production even if previously agreed federal regulations are
relaxed by the Trump administration.

Maintenance of these stricter car pollution standards will be an
important bulwark against complete dismantling of climate change
measures by the U.S. EPA, which is now led my climate change
deniers. Newly announced federal budget plans call for eliminating
climate change science funding by the U.S. EPA and the State
Department. Scientists everywhere must speak out against these
destructive policies. As one of them, I commend the California ARB
for its enlightened and encouraging stance in defense of the public
interest.

Thank you!
