Comment | This is the first time EPA has updated the federal lead standard since 1978. The new standard is much tougher and that will be good news for public health. Most parts of California probably already meet the new standard but it is important to improve lead monitoring to make sure they do, and if they don't lead abatement programs can begin. Now the areas that are likely not to meet the new standard are those that have manufacturing or recycling operations dealing with lead in their processes and emitting lead into the air. There are several of these sites in Los Angeles and they have caused that county to be out of attainment with the new requirement. So a lead abatement program can begin in LA County. It is important to deal with lead problems as soon as possible and the first step is to get an accurate sampling of where and how big the problems are. Since lead is a pollutant that goes into the air from manufacturing or recycling lead products, comes down into soil and dust, to go back into the air over again, its importance must be taken seriously. Thank you and bestwishes, Michael E. Bailey, 25801 Marguerite Parkway, No. 103, Mission Viejo, CA 92692. |
