Comment | Dear Chairman Nichols, As a physician I know the burdens faced by our children, the elderly and others living with chronic illnesses. While in Fresno I ran an asthma program where close to 20% of the children have Asthma. Here in Martinez (Contra Costa Co.) I see obesity, diabetes, hypertension, depression and Arthritis daily -all related to inactivity and "the car culture". I believe a change is possible through supporting AB 375. Policy to support public health by establishing the most ambitious regional greenhouse gas reduction targets must happen -recent events in the Gulf, and our severely impacted (polluted) air await our work. I lived in Fresno for a dozen years - I know sprawl, and the disconnected, developer driven urban nightmare it creates. Business as usual cannot continue. We must promote physically active walking, biking or transit alternatives to driving, and put more than 1 or 2% of our transit budget into biking/walking. Please continue to support public health by establishing strong regional greenhouse gas targets that support getting us active!! California deserves a healthier population. Thanks for moving us in that direction and your support of AB375. Dr. David Pepper |
