Subject | Upcoming ZEV decision - covert all existing cars to all-electric |
Comment | I have informed myself about the obvious feasibility and viability of all-electric vehicles. I have watched "Who Killed the Electric Car", and have shown it to family and friends. I have taken it very much to heart. I write to strongly express my support for an expanded, rather than a reduced, all-electric vehicle requirement for auto manufacturers. However, I would go further than requiring production of a larger percentage of new cars to be all-electric. Instead, I would promote the conversion of the already crash-tested, roadworthy gas-powered cars we all own into all-electric cars. To do otherwise is to waste a precious resource in the cars we already own, and to encourage further environmental damage by manufacturing new cars. This option will be much cheaper for each consumer and our ailing economy with strong interwoven links to the world economy, and thus much more viable. I would tax the production of gas-powered cars as much as possible, and plough the proceeds into battery and solar-power research and manufacture by small innovative companies. You have a duty to the public, not private companies who cannot - and rightfully do not in a democracy like ours - vote. The large automakers can easily afford to produce all-electric vehicles - they simply don't have the disincentive to not use the infrastructure they use to produce the long-obsolete technology they continue to sell us - the gas-powered vehicle. If we do not impose it, the consequences to our health, environment and our currently unsustainable economy will continue to escalate. It is your duty within your mandate to do your best to ensure this does not occur. A sustainable economy is based on a sustainable environment, and on preserving the wealth of individuals rather than turning them into constant consumers, constantly needing to spend to meet the basics (for example, on gas, not only to work but for the mass transport of food; ZEVs transporting food would eliminate most of the major transportation (gasoline) costs involved in purchsaing food, meaning instant poverty relief to millions and millions of Californians). You have tremendous power that the People of California have invested in you to make wise, far-reaching decisions that will benefit the lives and prospects of millions of people - not just in California, but throughout the US and around the world by your wise example. Let it be so. Sincerely, Simcha Udwin |
