Subject | Reducing ZEV requirements |
Comment | I strongly oppose reducing the goal of 25,000 pure ZEVs on California's roads between 2012 and 2014. In fact, it should be increased. The automakers have proven electric vehicles can be viable, and battery technology has improved dramatically since the late 1990s. Just look at how many Toyota Prius vehicles are on the road, when they cost $10,000 more than their Yaris, which gets nearly the mpg of the Prius. The American people are willing to pay more, and any available tax incentives make it that much easier on the public. The ZEV goals were originally 2% in 1998, 3% in 2001, and 10% in 2003, but later CARB put off clean air progress for 14 years until 2012. Why? As that date draws near, CARB staff proposes to delay again, by cutting the target in 2012 from 0.4% to 0.04%. The new target does not even approach the number of vehicles previously shown to be possible. Today we have better technology and significantly raised consumer awareness, so there is no excuse for this backwards move. I ask that you put 25,000 pure ZEVs on California's roads between 2012 and 2014, even more if CARB is willing to push for it. Even though that is one fifth of the 1998 goal, it is a start. Your staff's proposed 840 vehicles a year is not even a start; it is an insult. Please do better, and please push pure electric vehicles over Hydrogen, which is the least efficient of all alternative energies. Please do this for all of us. |
