Transportation of people and goods by rail is by far the most productive mode, in terms of energy, labor, or land use per passenger or ton-mile. This means that shifting to rail as the backbone of our transportation system will reduce our use of energy, land, and labor. In turn, the increase in transportation productivity will benefit the rest of the economy. In the future, electrification of the rail lines can permit powering from renewable sources such as wind, photovoltaics, or cellulose. If carbon sequestration can be made affordable, the electricity can be generated from domestic coal. |
