The global warming contributions of livestock are not limited to the methane they produce. The effect of trampling on soils' ability to capture carbon is not yet clear (see http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/center/articles/science-07-13-2008.html), but the attached article (Teepe) suggests intact soils capture carbon better than trampled soils. For this reason, CARB should follow this issue and look into eliminating livestock grazing from state public lands. |
