I am writing now because I am very concerned that the carbon offset protocols under the Air Resources Board's jurisdiction do not reflect environmentally sustainable practices and that their drafting has been subject to excessive influence from the same corporate interests designated as polluters. I have researched this in depth. Recent proposed protocols include the Mine Methane Capture protocol and the Rice Cultivation Project protocol. Both of these were written in tandem with input from "stakeholders," meaning some of the same vested industry interests, and both of them are written for the fossil fuel industry and big agriculture. Neither of them offers a truly viable alternative option, at a time when alternatives in both energy and agriculture do exist. Why aren't the energy offsets being written for solar, wind, and geothermal development? Why doesn't the rice offset reflect the environmental developments to protect wetlands or acknowledge the System of Rice Intensification or the organic/permaculture movements that have become globally widespread? I am attaching a copy of a document that summarizes my research on the latter offset. |
