The Field Operations & Warranty Section is seeking a highly motivated Air Resources Engineer who can interact with automobile manufacturers to identify possible emission component defects or emissions related warranty issues that can lead to corrective actions (e.g., recall) by the manufacturer. The investigative nature of this work would involve analyzing the Emissions Warranty Information Report Database and emissions data, and conducting specialized field investigations and in-house vehicle test programs.  The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the warranty issues for the manufacturers of automobiles, heavy duty diesel vehicles, as well as off-road vehicles.  The ideal candidate must be a quick learner, demonstrate a strong work ethic, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The Data Development Services Section (DDSS) has an opening for a motivated, creative individual who can help our team of engineers and specialists in developing and maintaining applications and databases that process vehicle certification, compliance and warranty data submitted by manufacturers, and support vehicle emission testing data collected within Emissions Compliance, Automotive Regulations and Science (ECARS) Division. The Portable Equipment Registration Section (PERS) currently has an opening for an enthusiastic Air Resources Technician involved in the Portable Equipment Registration Program (PERP) to work under close supervision of Air Pollution Specialists, Air Resources Engineers, and a Staff Services Analyst, and perform technical and administrative duties throughout the portable equipment registration process.  Responsibilities include evaluating and processing portable applications, determining eligibility of engines and equipment units, performing emissions calculations for engineering evaluations, and computing emission limitations for operating conditions.  Data entry duties include creating company accounts, entering application requests, and editing and updating existing equipment and company data.

The Freight Systems Section is looking for an experienced staff person to participate in a team developing innovative and creative strategies for reducing air pollutant emissions from the freight transport system.  Specifically, someone with technical expertise or interest in the potential for zero and near-zero emission freight equipment that can assist in developing new policies in relation to technology and associated infrastructure, while also helping process freight data and information.  Knowledge base should include a familiarity with technology types such as locomotives, heavy duty trucks, ocean going vessels, cargo handling equipment, and/or transport refrigeration units as well as an understanding for the technology duty cycle and infrastructure challenges associated with a transition towards zero emission equipment.

The Office of Information Services (OIS) seeks an experienced Air Pollution Specialist (APS) to provide science, technology, and regulatory-based expertise within OIS to address increasingly more complex, multifaceted technology and environmental issues, and develop and implement technology solutions.  This is an opportunity to develop a board-wide view of CARB and work in a broad range of subject areas, including regulatory compliance determination, air emissions estimation, and enforcement activities.  The APS facilitates the interaction between OIS and program-based scientists, engineers and contractors to assemble data from multiple sources, select appropriate technology solutions, and ensure data collection activities reflect compliance with existing and proposed regulations.  The APS studies and documents data flows throughout the organization and develops a broad view of the organization’s information needs, providing guidance to avoid organizational and computing "silos".   This work may include programming software and databases designed to manage air emissions, air quality, and other aerometric data.

Staff Air Pollution Specialist

Industrial Strategies Division

The Fuels Evaluation Section has an opening for a Staff Air Pollution Specialist who will take a leading role in enhancements to lifecycle analysis of fuels used to calculate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of transportation fuels under the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).  The LCFS is an early action item under the Global Warming Solutions Act also known as AB32.  With the recent passage of SB32, additional enhancements are being proposed to meet the mandated targets required by SB32.  The Fuels Evaluation Section is responsible for evaluating greenhouse gas emissions for all transportation fuels under the LCFS.
