Trailer Aerodynamic Equipment |
The regulation requires SmartWay verified aerodynamic equipment, such as trailer skirts, trailer end fairings, undercarriage devices, and other technologies. The equipment will make a trailer more aerodynamic and therefore more fuel efficient when pulled by a heavy-duty tractor. |
SmartWay verified low rolling resistance tires further increase the fuel efficiency of tractor-trailers. The regulation requires the use of SmartWay verified low rolling resistance tires on 53-foot or longer box trailers and the tractors that pull them.
Rather than retrofitting a trailer with one or more of the verified aerodynamic and tire technologies, you can also purchase a SmartWay designated trailer directly from one of the trailer manufacturers with the required equipment already installed.
SmartWay designated tractors are specially designed to be more fuel efficient and are available from selected tractor manufacturers. The regulation requires 2011 and newer sleeper-cab tractors pulling 53-foot or longer box trailers to be SmartWay designated models. |
*SmartWay designated tractors and trailers were previously called SmartWay "certified."
